Living the Alkaline Lifestyle

A slightly alkaline environment is a foundational component to optimum health.

Adopting an alkaline lifestyle is not a long-term diet.  It is a way of life.

The Alkaline Lifestyle is a revolutionary breakthrough based on the research of several 20th century chemists and health professionals who realized that cancer cells flourish in an acidic environment. This finding led them to create the theory that health could be maintained by keeping the body in an alkaline state to maintain a strong immune system and keep the bugs at bay. More people than ever before are waking up to understand that our diet and our thoughts are a huge part of the preventative healthcare system.

Is diet alone enough to maintain our health and keep us away from disease? Certainly, appropriate diet is fundamental to an alkaline pH, but our mental, emotional, and spiritual health is also necessary to create an alkaline lifestyle.

What does an Alkaline Lifestyle Mean?
The concept of living an alkaline lifestyle can be seen as a very simple approach to improving one’s health by getting the pH of the body into a slightly alkaline state where the body functions the best. But in fact there is much more than preventing disease with proper alkaline diet, and drinking the right water, doing the right exercise, etc… Above all it is a style of living that seeks to honor the wisdom of our human body and to respect the cooperative nature of each of our cells.

When we understand that we are an energy being first and foremost, and if our dominant intention is to tune in and align with the frequency of the Source within us, we can then provide the perfect foundation for the cells of our physical body to thrive.

The Alkaline Lifestyle is about creating a life of balance, and mindfulness. In chemical terms the balance is between acid and alkaline forces in the body, and in emotional terms it is about finding the peace in our mind, body, and spirit. When we are able to attain that balance, we prevent disease, we increase our vitality, slow down aging, and we find ourselves smiling more often.

Different steps to live an Alkaline Life Style
1- Diet – The body is truly amazing! It is difficult to visualize how the body responds to the foods which are assimilated and the forces of life within the body itself that maintain a balanced acidity within the bloodstream and all the body tissues.

Alkalinizing foods should make up 80% of our daily diet and acidifying foods 20%. I invite you also to look at the food chart pH so you can get a visual idea of which foods are considered alkaline and acidic. There is conflicting information on the Internet about which foods are alkaline and which are acid-forming. Please feel free to investigate.

Basically, the most alkalizing foods are fresh vegetables, healthy oils, seeds, and whole grains. Fruits also have very high water content, but since they also have fructose, they are not considered as alkalizing as vegetables.

Acidic foods are those you already know are bad for you: refined foods, fast foods, trans-fats, meat, dairy, sugar, caffeine, white bread, white pasta and rice, condiments, alcohol, chocolate, chips, ice cream and pizza.

Acidic foods like lemons and grapefruit, when consumed, become alkalinizing in the body, so what is acidic in nature does not translate to increased acidity in the body. Truly acidic foods include meats, poultry, fish, sausage, dairy, white flour products, and sweets.

image0402- Tips in Living an Alkaline lifestyle

  • Start the day with an alkaline boost (homemade vegetable broth, or a glass of lemon water, alkaline punch of chlorella, spirulina, green barley, or super blue algae in your water)
  • Consume two cups of vegetables for lunch and two cups for dinner
  • Enjoy nuts, seeds, herbs and spices daily
  • Incorporate alkalizing drinks daily
  • Limit sweeteners and use them in small quantities in alkalizing forms (stevia)
  • Monitor your acid load and adjust your program as necessary
  • Be flexible, adjust your diet as necessary
  • Food is only as good as the nutrients found in the soil in which it is grown. Buy food from your local farmer as much as possible
  • Eat Mindfully. Pay attention to subtle energy shifts to know how best to fuel your body’s needs. One of the greatest challenges to our bodies is eating too much food.
  • Breathe between bites and give your body a chance to respond to the food as you ingest it. Slow down, and notice how each food affects you. Our digestive system runs best when fueled in small quantities.
  • Ask your body. Ask your gut feeling if that food offers a positive, supportive nutrition, or not. If you feel yes, then enjoy it. If you feel no, then avoid it. If you are unsure, eat only a little and move on to more certain things.
  • Enjoy proper hydration

In my clinic I see many people chronically dehydrated. Being properly hydrated with the right water makes a huge difference. It allows our body to metabolize and excrete more acidic waste from the kidneys or via the skin.

All water is not equal. Almost all bottled water is unregulated tap water. And tap water has been found to contain,  but not limited to, the following: fluoride, chlorine, radioactive contaminants, pharmaceutical drugs, and heavy  metals such as lead, aluminum and arsenic.

There are so many benefits to drinking water. It’s important to note that drinking alkaline water doesn’t give you a  free pass: it cannot neutralize consumption of lots of soda, sugar, medications, and meat/dairy—all of which are highly acidic.

Masaru Emoto, who wrote The Healing Power of Water, testifies to the potency of water and how it absorbs and reflects energetic intention; we can actually infuse it with the power, through intention and prayer, to transform  negative energy in the body and flush negative frequencies from the body and surrounding energy fields. We are such amazing powerful beings!

3,  Become a connoisseur of water – Ways to hydrateimage042

  • Drink 8-10 glasses of water each day. Drink clean water rich in natural minerals and with a healthy pH. The recommended dosage is to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water every day.
  • Drink lemon water: A glass of lukewarm, reversed osmosis or spring water with freshly-squeezed juice from 1/4 lemon helps cleanse the digestive system, ignite your metabolism and rid your body of excess acids.
  • A 1/8 teaspoon of baking soda in 1 quart of water will make even the more acidic water alkaline.
  • A pinch of Celtic sea salt or Himalayan pink salt in a glass of water helps nourish adrenal fatigue and boost alkalinity.
  • Drink organic herbal teas such as peppermint, ginger, lemongrass, and nettle.

4.  Using True Nourishment to Make lasting Changes

Adopting an alkaline lifestyle is not a long-term diet. It is a way of life

The more I am able to love and accept myself exactly as I am, the easier it is for me
to love and accept others, and feel healthy and wealthy.

Diet alone is not enough to maintain a pH balance and keep us away from illness. Certainly, exercise and good diet are fundamental to an alkaline pH, but our mental, emotional, and spiritual health is greatly contributing to create lasting health.

In this section we will encourage regular self-care practices, and ways to minimize stress in your life.

image044Exercise

The body is the vehicle through which we journey in this lifetime, and it is intended to move. Just as cars were made to run, our physical vehicle is made to move as well. Our physical body becomes “rusty” due to lack of movement when you live a sedentary life. Working out and stretching is a proven method to calm the mind and relax the body during stressful times. Hormones are release during exercise that helps us focus better, and brings us more balance. People who exercise daily also sleep better and have a stronger immune system. Exercise helps normalize your glucose, insulin, and leptin levels by optimizing their receptor sensitivity. Sweating is also a great way to support acid excretion.

image046Breathe

Deep breathing makes the blood more alkaline. Get fresh air every day. Conscious breathing allows us to stop, to let go of the monkey mind and to relax. Our breath is what continues to sustain us and give us life, our breath excites and calms us, it carries toxins out from the body, and renews us.

By doing simple breathing exercises a few times a day you give your body a huge helping hand in removing acids. In addition, with the practice of being mindful of the breath we can become aware of patterns and emotions, thoughts and beliefs. By being more in tune and aligned with our breath, we can become more peaceful, more accepting, more loving and present to what is. The best part is you can do this anytime, anywhere – and it only takes a few minutes.  Ah zone

image048Mindfulness

Our brain, our body, our nervous system and our senses comprise the profound and most elegant ‘computer’ known on earth. And yet . . . its greatest performance capacities have barely been touched. Most of us have allowed our mind to be programmed by others, and therefore we have adopted unconscious patterning and conditioning and allowed negative patterns to govern our lives.

We think all the time. We even tend to over-think. Our minds are incredible super computers that work 24/7. Our minds are capable of observation, examination, scrutiny, analysis, dissection, classification, deduction, and conclusion. But the mind is also capable of mindful awareness – a way of relating to all experience – positive, negative, and neutral in an open, receptive way. This awareness involves freedom from grasping and from wanting, or judging anything to be different. Mindfulness is a practice that encourages focusing attention on the present moment. It is a way of inhabiting one’s body, one’s mind, one’s moment-by-moment experience. It is a foundational way of being that helps us to regain and stay in balance.

The practice of mindfulness can bring many benefits to our emotional and physical health, as well as all relationships in our life. Mindfulness is also an amazing tool for stress management and overall wellness because it can be used at virtually any time and can quickly bring lasting results.

image050Inquiry

Inquiry work is a simple, effective method of getting to the root cause of an issue whether it is physical, emotional, mental or spiritual. We are able to let go of old thoughts, beliefs, vows and patterns, which can be completely cleared, and find completion through forgiveness. It takes courage and discipline to be mindful and fully present, to embrace the overwhelming complexity and intensity of our lives. Listening to our own innate wisdom and resting in the deeper truth of your being is incredibly healing and freeing, leaving you feeling free to truly be yourself.  I have witnessed incredible healing and changes in people I care for.

image052Detox

Detox is a great way to remove toxins, pathogens, overgrown yeast (candida) and parasites that have built up in our body over time. Ever-increasing air pollution, chemicals, drugs prescription and too much of the “wrong” food contribute towards free radical damage and acidosis. There are several ways to detox, however a natural and safe way to remove toxins is achieved by simply focusing on creating a pH balance in your body. By Alkalizing the body through diet and also by simply drinking alkaline water, your body will remove those harmful toxins.

image054Rest – Relaxation

Relaxation isn’t just about peace of mind or enjoying a hobby. Relaxation is a process that decreases the effects of stress on our mind and body. When you are able to find 15 minutes in every day to relax and tune to the frequency of our own Source, all resistance and hindrance will cease, the cells of our body have the opportunity to return to their natural state of Well-Being. Relaxation isn’t just about peace of mind or enjoying a hobby. Relaxation techniques can help us to cope with everyday stress and with stress related to various health issues.

image056Laughter

Whoever said laughter is the best medicine is so right.

The best thing about laughter is that it works for everybody, regardless of age, gender, or medical condition. It boosts the immune system, lowers blood pressure, improves heart and respiratory functions, regulates blood sugar, and improves physical appearance, and so much more… Personally,   I always feel more lighthearted and positive after a good laugh.

image058De-Stress

Stress is not going to disappear from our lives, but we can learn how to respond differently to stressors. Stress can affected the neuron-endocrine system, causing higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol tending towards anxiety. For example, the stress hormone, cortisol, is ‘catabolic’ in nature, which means it breaks down tissue (particularly the protein that makes up muscle) as a source of energy.  This process releases a large amount of acidic waste into the blood.  Try to avoid stress, learn to respond differently to stressors, and control negative emotions by meditating, thinking positively, and smiling more often.

Instead of corrosive thoughts that generate stress, we can use the Power of our Mind to Make Healthy Changes in our attitude, our reaction to life’s daily stressors, and our ability to release stress . Remember, thoughts are just energy, so don’t believe everything you think.  Thoughts have no power.  The power is if you say yes or no to them.  Pay attention to your thoughts and exhale deeply.

image060Sleep

The quality and quantity of your sleep are very important, this is the time when our body regenerates and heals. Our bodies need about eight hours of rest every night. Because our bodies are tuned into the natural rhythms of life, they have inner clocks that rest and rejuvenate the organs in sync with the natural world.

image062Gratitude for self and others

Feeling grateful for who we are, what we have, the bounty in our life, the things that are working, the simple pleasures, our gifts and talents, and those we love is an underestimated force. Gratefulness allows us to be present to what is, to be in our hearts, to be joyful, to be aligned with our own source, and to let go of what seems to not be working. Gratitude is the thankfulness for just being, it connects us with the essence of ourselves, and we feel a sense of  love, peace, and healing.

image064Compassion

“When you begin to touch your heart or let your heart be touched, you begin to discover that it’s bottomless, that it doesn’t have any resolution, that this heart is huge, vast, and limitless.  You begin to discover how much warmth and gentleness is there, as well as how much space.” Pema Chödrön (2001)

image068Self-Love

One of the causes of a poor self-esteem is the absence of the lack of unconditional Love. Self- love is something that needs to be demonstrated, not just talked about. Doing something every day to nourish our self, sends an important messages to our subconscious, and also to the world around us. By placing importance on taking positive actions which bring us fulfillment, we are telling ourself and others that our needs and wellbeing are important- that we matter.   The more I am able to love and accept myself exactly as I am, the easier it is for me to love and accept others, and feel healthy and wealthy.

image070Others

It is important to use therapies or services that are in alignment with your needs, and trust yourself when choosing what works for you. There are many other complimentary therapies that can support you in this journey. Yoga, Bach flower, Homeopathy, Herbs, Acupuncture, Deep tissue muscle release, Breath work, Energy Freedom Technique, and other energy psychology release work can be useful to achieve inner and outer balance in our lives. We offer these therapies at the clinic.

image072Supplements

Supplements are one of the most overwhelming and confusing parts of the alkaline lifestyle. There are so many supplements out there, all promising different things and all claiming they are better than the others. While supplements are not a substitute for a healthy diet and lifestyle, they can assist you in making your body more alkaline.

Here are some supplements I recommend:

  • Green powder Combination of powdered grasses, fruits, vegetables and sprouts with a focus on wheatgrass, chlorella, barley grass and others.
  • Electrolyte buffers of Sodium, Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium work in the blood, lymph, and extra- intercellular fluids to binds acids, which are then removed through the urine.
  • Omega oils: Take an omega 3 supplement or an omega oil blend including omega-3 -6
  • Enzymes – Protozyme or Marcozyme proteolyctic enzymes
  • (Hydrochloric acid (HCL) maintains proper alkaline/acid balance. Vit B12 and folic acid will not be absorbed from food sources without the correct amount of HCL in the Stomach.
  • Ionic Mineral from Eidon, bones and extra mag, 1and 1/2 dropper 2x daily
  • Cell Food Oxygen and trace minerals (put a few drops in the water)
  • Alkala Pleo-Alkala anti acid powder Pleomorphic products (Potassium bicarbonate (7.8%, Sodium bicarbonate
  • (7.8%, Sodium citrate (1.6%) – Take it for a short period of time.
  • Celtic / Himalayan sea salt (use it in your meal)
  • Baking soda (take on empty stomach, between meals)
  • Magnesium citrate take it for short period of time (1 tablespoon upon arising and 1 tablespoon upon retiring)
  • Vit D Vitamin D prevents the buildup of calcium deposits in arteries. It is well known that calcium needs vitamin D in order to be absorbed.
  • Protein buffers of glutathione, methionine, cystine, taurine, just to name a few, act as buffers intra-cellularly to bind or neutralize acids during cellular disorganization.

Testing Saliva and Urine pH

Specific values of the urine and saliva provide valuable information about the biochemical building blocks of our body, enzymes, amino acids, and minerals. This information may help identify underlying factors or stresses that may be contributing to low energy and lack of well-being.

SALIVA TEST

image074

While generally more acidic than blood, salivary pH mirrors the blood and is also a fairly good indicator of the body and fluids.

  • Salivary pH is a fair indicator of the health of the extracellular fluids and their alkaline mineral reserves, especially calcium.
  • It is a good indicator of the condition of the lymph fluid, and for evaluating whether our body is responding to internal (mental and emotional) stimuli.
  • Saliva testing may indicate the activity of digestive enzymes in the body. These enzymes are primarily manufactured by the stomach, liver and pancreas.
  • While the saliva also utilizes buffers just like the urine, it relies on this process to a much lesser degree.

TESTING YOUR SALIVA

Materials: Testing pH paper (preferably pHhydrion paper), a plastic spoon and saliva.
Instructions:
– The most accurate reading of saliva testing is recorded immediately upon awakening – after sleeping at least 5 hrs
before food or drink or teeth brushing. Then test 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating.
– Draw some saliva to stimulate new saliva – Then spit saliva into a plastic spoon.
– Tear off a one-inch strip of pH paper, place it into saliva (preferable to licking the pH Hydrion paper).
– Wait a few seconds until the pH paper changes color, and match the color of your immersed pH paper with the
color chart provided on the pH testing roll.
– Write your result in the record sheet. Write any comments that may be pertinent.
– Test 2 to 3 times a day in order to get an average reading.

Results/Indications:

  • The ideal saliva readings should be between 7.0 to 7.5.
  • Morning urine should be above pH 7. If your saliva stays between 6.8 and 7.5+ pH all day, your body is functioning within a healthy range.
  • After eating, the saliva pH should rise to 7.8 or higher. Unless this occurs, the body has alkaline mineral deficiencies (mainly calcium and Magnesium) and will not break down food very well.
  • A reading lower than 6.5 is indicative of insufficient alkaline reserves. If the saliva pH is too low (below 6.5), the body may be producing too many acids and has lost the ability to adequately remove them through the urine.
  • If the saliva is too high (over 6.8), the body may suffer from constipation, excess gas, and production of yeast, mold, and fungus.

URINE TEST

image076

The pH of the urine indicates how the body is working to maintain the proper pH of the blood.

  • The urine reveals the alkaline building (anabolic) and acid tearing down (catabolic) cycles.
  • The pH of urine indicates the efforts of the body via the kidneys, adrenals, lungs and gonads to regulate body pH balance through the buffer salts and hormones.
  • Urine can provide a fairly accurate picture of body chemistry, because the kidneys filter out the buffer salts of pH regulation and provide values based on what the body is eliminating.
  • The urine pH test provides valuable information about your alkaline reserve status, which is affected by what you eat. Urine testing may indicate how well your body is excreting acids and assimilating minerals, especially calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium.

TESTING YOUR URINE:

Materials: a cup, and Testing pH paper (preferably pHhydrion paper), and urine.
Instructions:
– Dip the pH test paper in the cup, shake off the excess and read immediately. Don’t place the pH test paper in the
stream as it tends to wash out the color.
– Before eating any food, test your first and second urine of the morning.
– Then check your urine between meals
– Wait a few seconds until the pH paper changes color, and match the color of your immersed pH paper with the
color chart provided on the pH testing roll
– Write your result on record sheet. Mark an “X” in the box that corresponds to your urine pH
– Write any comments that may be pertinent
– Test a few times a day in order to get an average reading

Results / Indications

  • Your first urine should run optimally between a pH 6.8 to 7.2.
  • If your first urine pH* is lower than 6.8 you are deficient in alkaline buffers.
  • If your first urine pH is higher than 7.2 your alkaline buffers are sufficient to neutralize the acidic food and drinks you ingested the day before.
  • Before eating any food, your 2nd urine should be ideally 7.2 or higher.
  • If the pH is lower than 6.8 you are in a state of latent acidosis and you are deficient of alkaline buffers such as bicarbonate, sodium, magnesium, and calcium. The lower pH is also indicative of a diet high in protein and an
increase in acids from proteins including nitric, sulfuric, phosphoric, and uric acids.

Tracking your urine and salivary pH over the course of a week, or two will provide a window into what is going on in your internal, and external world.

*We use first morning urine for assessment of the integrity of the biological environment is to quantify the acid related activities that occur during the sleep cycle. It will subsequently allow us a look at the buffering capacity of the kidney during this active elimination phase, while giving us an idea of how much acid has been produced and for how long it has been being produced.

CONCLUSION:

Traditional Chinese Medicine and a new approach in integrated Medicine focus on regulating the internal chemical balance pH. They both affirm that health is established by bringing and keeping the body’s systems in balance.

The alkaline diet is not restrictive at all, and is really simple, once you’ve gotten used to it.

image078Remember, every cell of our body has the desire to be as healthy as we want to be. We are the gardener of our body. As we begin to awaken, expand, and elevate our consciousness from a fear-based, to a love-centered frequency, our cells as ‘intelligent’ units, in their own right will respond to our most honest and loving thoughts.

Take one step at a time and be kind to yourself; it takes time to adopt an alkaline lifestyle and to be the master of our own garden. It takes focus, awareness, and desire to be healthy and to create a peaceful state of mind that supports our well-being. Let’s remind each other that success is a journey – not a destination – and the same holds true for living an Alkaline Lifestyle!

Most of the degenerative and metabolic diseases are merely the end point of progressive, accumulated, toxic waste matter suffocating a particular tissue or organ that is too stagnant, or weak to clean house.

Therefore, detox, strengthen your body, monitor your pH, take the right nutrients, and turn your attention to reflection and inquiry – feelings, perceptions, beliefs, patterns and consciousness.

To conclude this article, here are a few more words of advice

  • Treat the body with the reverence and respect it deserves. It is a wellspring of true gifts of invaluable wisdom.
  • Trust the body’s innate intelligence to take care of itself – as long as we take care of it.
  • More is not necessarily better.
  • Food is only as good as the nutrients found in the soil in which it is grown.
  • Remove / treat the cause of the problem instead of just treating the physical symptoms.
  • Build up your alkaline reserves and you will be amazed at how much better you feel.
  • Try to live in the moment, do creative projects, and spend time in nature.
